MY ESPANOLA NOW – Community group incorporates to save Mindemoya Old School

Author: Rosalind Russell Published February 9th, 2021

Community group incorporates to save Mindemoya Old School Friends of the Mindemoya Old School on Manitoulin Island have officially incorporated with intentions of saving the old school from demolition. President Jan McQuay says with being a legal entity, they can now enter into contracts to save the historically significant building. She says they want to either take over the ownership of the old school from the Township of Central Manitoulin, which owns the property or sign a long-term lease to refurbish and repurpose it for other uses. Council has ordered the building demolished, but the non-profit hopes council will recognize their proposal as a viable alternative to keeping the building, adding they are now able to apply for grants and other funding supports to carry out a retrofit. If council rescinds the demolition, the group will begin work on a business plan and grant application process. McQuay says they meet with the municipal Property Committee tonight to present their proposal.
